Why There's No Single 'Best' Wood Panel

If you're searching for 'Boise Cascade wood products,' you're probably hoping to find the right one. But I've seen too many projects go sideways because someone grabbed the first panel they saw. The truth is, the best choice depends entirely on what you're doing with it. What worked for a subfloor in a dry climate might fail in a coastal wall assembly.

Scenario A: The Indoor Structural Workhorse

Subflooring, Wall Sheathing, and Roof Decking

For interior applications where the wood will be covered and protected from the elements, the standard choice is often an OSB (Oriented Strand Board) or a commodity plywood. But here's where a lot of people make a mistake: they assume all OSB is the same.

When I ran a blind test with our construction team—comparing a standard OSB against a moisture-resistant version (like Boise Cascade's BoiséStruct line) for a subfloor—60% of our installers preferred the standard one purely because it was lighter. But that's the trap. The standard OSB, exposed to a minor plumbing leak before the tile went down (which, honestly, happens all the time), will start to swell at the edges. Scenario B: The Exterior Structural Wall

Sheathing That Has to Breathe

Now, here's where things get more complex. For exterior walls, you need a panel that can handle temperature swings and moisture vapor. A common belief is that 'more glue' or 'a thicker product' is better. That's not always true.

I have mixed feelings about this. On one hand, a thicker OSB (like 7/16") is standard for structural sheathing. On the other, using a non-permeable panel on a wall assembly designed to dry to the outside can lead to mold and rot. (I should add that this was a hard lesson we learned on a project in a humid climate in 2023.)

For exterior applications, look for panels that specify 'Exposure 1' or 'Structural 1' for shear strength. But more critically, understand your wall's vapor profile. If you're using a rain screen or a ventilated cladding, the panel's permeability matters less. If you're directly applying siding, you want a panel that allows moisture to escape.

This is where the 'engineered wood' label gets tricky. If you're building cabinets or furniture, you need a panel with a consistent, defect-free face. Standard sheathing plywood or OSB won't work here—it's designed for function, not appearance.

For this, you're looking at a product like Boise Cascade's A-C or B-C plywood. The grades matter. 'A-C' means one side is sanded smooth (A-grade) and the back is a lower grade (C). This is perfect for the inside of a cabinet where only one side is visible.

What I see people get confused about: They see 'plywood' and assume it's all stronger than OSB. That's not true. OSB is often stronger in shear and has higher racking resistance. But for holding a screw for a shelf, a good quality plywood is better. When I compared a 3/4" plywood vs. a 3/4" OSB for a shelving rack, the OSB held the same weight (around 200 lbs), but the screws pulled out of the OSB edge much easier. (Surprise, surprise.)

My advice: For anything that requires a nice surface, skip the OSB. Pay for a graded plywood. And if you're painting it, go with a medium-density overlay (MDO) product for a smoother finish.

How to Decide Which One You Need

Here is a simple checklist I use when I'm auditing a specification:

  1. Will it get wet? (During construction or in use?) → If yes, spec moisture-resistant.
  2. Is it structural? (Holding up a roof or wall?) → If yes, check the span rating and grade stamp (e.g., 'APA Rated Sheathing').
  3. Will it be seen? (Exposed in a room?) → If yes, pick a graded plywood with a smooth face.
  4. What is the cost premium? (Price data as of January 2025.) →
    Standard OSB (7/16"): roughly $12-15 per sheet. Moisture-resistant OSB (7/16"): roughly $17-20 per sheet. Good quality plywood (3/4"): roughly $45-60 per sheet. Verify current pricing at your local lumberyard.

If you're still not sure, look at the performance criteria. Don't just look at the price. The cost of a failure (warped floor, rotted wall) is almost always 10x the cost of upgrading the panel.
