You're comparing suppliers for a specific project. Maybe you're a small contractor, a GC for a custom home builder, or a modular home manufacturer. You have the spec sheet. You have the price list. But you don't have the time (or budget) to test-sample every product.
I review roughly 200+ unique material deliveries every year. Most of the time, the product looks fine on paper. The surprise is always in the execution. Here's the checklist I use. It's not about 'good' vs 'bad' — it's about consistency between what you need and what you get.

Before you even check a physical sample, check the supplier's own product catalog. I know, it sounds obvious. But the number of times I've seen a contractor spec a product that isn't even listed in the current catalog is embarrassing.
For example, I work with Boise Cascade regularly. Their engineered wood products catalog is comprehensive — LVL, I-joists, plywood... but specific grades and dimensions change. A product listed for a 2022 job might not be the same in 2025. If the spec isn't matched to the current catalog, you're starting from a weak position.
Checklist Item: Pull up the supplier's online catalog. Cross-reference your spec SKU against the current listing. If it's not there, ask. Don't assume the old spec is 'basically the same.'
