Use this if you're responsible for ordering engineered wood products for commercial or residential projects. If you're a contractor, architect, or GC's purchasing agent, these are the steps that won't be in the manufacturer's catalog. Step 1: Verify the Spec Against the Actual Span

This is one people miss. Boise Cascade offers both treated and untreated versions of many of their products, including certain plywood and lumber. The treatment adds lead time. Not every distributor stocks treated. If you assume your local yard carries it, and they don't, you're looking at a 2-week wait.
In 2022, I ordered untreated oriented strand board for a subfloor in a below-grade application. The GC hadn't specified it needed treatment. By the time we realized, the untreated material was on site. We ate the cost—$1,800—and lost three days. The lesson: verify treatment requirements before you place the order, not after.
Step 3: Check the Glulam Bearing Length—Don't Assume

Now I send a quick email after every important call: 'Per our conversation, we're ordering [X] with a guaranteed delivery of [Y]. Please confirm.' It's simple. It's not adversarial. It saves everyone.
Final Thoughts
Engineered wood is a fantastic product. Boise Cascade makes good stuff. But the process of specifying and ordering it has these hidden friction points that cost time and money if you don't have a checklist. I don't say my checklist is perfect.
