The plywood order that should have been simple
In September 2022, I put in a purchase order for 50 sheets of "3/4 Boise Cascade plywood." We needed it for a stage deck at a rental venue. The top surface would be visible, sanded, and sealed. From the outside, ordering plywood looks like ordering a bottle of water. The reality is that a product name is a door. The spec sheet is the room behind it.
Why this keeps happening
It's not because buyers are lazy. It's because product names are built for navigation, not for purchase decisions.
First, every website and catalog groups items into categories that are easy to browse: "plywood," "watch glass," "coupe glass," "drum set." Those are real useful words. But none of them tells you which variant you need. A "drum set for beginners" is a specific market segment, not a technical spec; "coupe glass" can mean 4 ounces or 7 ounces, stemmed or stemless; "watch glass" can be flat, domed, 1mm thick, or 3mm thick.
Second, when you've bought something before, the default starts to look like the product. In my head, "Boise Cascade plywood" meant "the thing I've ordered ten times, and it worked." I didn't think about why it worked. The previous projects used the default grade because the default matched the project. This time, the project needed a different face, and the name didn't communicate that.

But if you need a decorative face that will be stained or clear-coated, specify the face grade. Don't assume the brand name gets you a paint-grade face. And if you need a one-off book-matched specialty panel, a local hardwood supplier is probably a better fit. No product is "best" outside its context. The right question isn't "Is Boise Cascade good?" It's "Is this specific grade right for this specific surface?"
The same goes for the drum set. A beginner kit is exactly right for a young player's first lessons. It's wrong for a working venue. Honest limitation beats a confident wrong recommendation every time.
The takeaway isn't to memorize specs for every product on earth. It's to slow down when something has a familiar name. That's when you assume you don't need to look. I've learned to look anyway.
